Lighting guide

Best bedside lamp in Nairobi: a calm, honest buyer's guide

A bedside lamp is a small piece of furniture you touch every night. It should help you wind down, not wake you up. Here's how we'd choose one — written by a small lamp studio in Nairobi.

1. Start with the light, not the lamp

Bedrooms are for slowing down, so the light should match. That means warm (around 2700 K — the same colour as a low incandescent bulb), and dimmable, so the last twenty minutes before sleep can be at half-brightness. Cool, blueish light looks crisp on a desk and harsh on a bedside table. Every lamp in our collection ships with a warm, dimmable LED for exactly this reason.

2. Get the height right

The most common bedside-lamp mistake is putting a tall lamp on a low nightstand. When the bulb sits above eye level (sitting up in bed), you stare into the light source — a sure way to dry out your eyes before sleep. Aim for the bottom of the shade to sit roughly at shoulder height when you're propped up reading. If your nightstand is low, pick a shorter lamp; if it's tall, you have more freedom.

3. Choose a soft, diffused shade

A bare bulb beside the bed is unforgiving. Look for shades that diffuse the light — woven materials, opal glass, or sculpted forms that wrap the bulb. The point isn't to hide the light; it's to spread it gently across the whole room.

4. Pick something you'll want to look at

For 23 hours a day, your bedside lamp is sculpture. The light only happens for an hour. That ratio is worth respecting — choose something with a form you actually like, so the room feels considered even when the lamp is off.

Three eastudio lamps that work bedside

Every lamp we make ships with a warm, dimmable LED. These three are the easiest first picks for a nightstand:

  • Silo

A quiet monolith. Honest materials, almost no visual noise — a good choice if your bedroom is already busy and you want the lamp to disappear into the room.

  • Bruma

Light, held in soft haze — the shade does the diffusing work for you, so the room feels lit without ever looking bright.

  • Cairn

A small stack of warm light. Sculptural enough to read as art on its own, low enough that the bulb stays below eye level on most nightstands.

A note on buying handmade

Mass-produced bedside lamps are cheaper. They're also lit by whatever bulb survived the cost-cutting and shaded by whatever plastic was quickest to mould. We make ours one at a time in our Nairobi studio, which means small variation between pieces, longer lead times, and a lamp that's still here in ten years. If those trade-offs sound right, browse the full collection — there are six pieces, all warm-light, all dimmable, all delivered free anywhere in Kenya.
